Fire at Indian Pharma Plant Claims lives

(MENAFN) A fire erupted on Monday at a pharmaceutical factory in southern India, reportedly caused by an explosion, resulting in 34 fatalities, officials reported on Tuesday.

The tragedy occurred at a facility operated by Sigachi Industries in Telangana state's Sangareddy district.

Paritosh Pankaj, a senior police officer, confirmed the number of casualties and added that rescue efforts are almost complete.

The blaze led to the collapse of part of the building, leaving several workers trapped beneath the rubble.

The state administration has formed a high-level committee to "examine and probe the incident and its root causes."

According to a statement released Monday night by the chief minister's office, "A panel has been tasked with submitting recommendations on preventing such accidents in the future."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that he was “anguished” by the tragic loss of life.

He also declared compensation would be provided to the families of those who died and those injured.
