India Approaches US Trade Talks with Assertive Stance

(MENAFN) India is set to engage in bilateral trade negotiations with the United States from a position of confidence and strategic strength, according to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

As reported by a news outlet, Goyal emphasized that New Delhi will prioritize its national interests during these discussions.

Both Washington and New Delhi are actively working towards finalizing a trade deal, aiming to meet a July 9 deadline established by US President Donald Trump.

The urgency stems from the need to avoid the imposition of retaliatory tariffs if an agreement is not reached in time.

At a summit held on Saturday, Goyal remarked, “Today, India negotiates from a position of strength,” highlighting the country’s growing self-assurance on the global stage.

He further stated, “We are self-confident and can compete with anybody in the world.”

According to the report, the minister stressed that India does not allow external deadlines to dictate the pace of its negotiations.

Instead, he asserted, “We negotiate keeping national interest in mind, and national interest is paramount in all our global engagements.”

Since resuming office in January, President Trump has intensified his focus on protecting American manufacturers through a series of tariff-related actions.

This culminated on April 2—referred to by Trump as ‘Liberation Day’—with the announcement of broad tariffs, including a flat 10 percent rate and additional charges reaching up to 70 percent on nations he accused of engaging in the most “unfair” trade practices against the United States.
