Greenspace protest against deep-sea mining initiatives
More than a dozen activists gathered at the protest site, holding banners with messages such as "Declare a moratorium - stop deep-sea mining" and "Protect the deep sea." The event was timed with the opening of the International Seabed Authority’s (ISA) annual assembly in Jamaica, where representatives from 170 countries are set to negotiate rules for mining in international waters.
"The German government needs to make a clear commitment against the start of deep-sea mining to prevent irreversible damage to the seabed," Anna Saito, a Greenpeace specialist in deep-sea mining, said. "They must advocate for a global moratorium that stops the exploitation of the deep sea."
Germany currently holds exploration rights for a 75,000 square kilometer section of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Central Pacific—an area rich in manganese nodules and other valuable resources.
However, environmental organizations have criticized Germany's official stance, which supports only a “precautionary pause” rather than a comprehensive ban. This approach allows for continued preparations for future mining activities despite environmental concerns.
The ISA negotiations, scheduled to run through July 25, are viewed as pivotal in shaping the global framework for protecting deep-sea ecosystems and regulating seabed resource extraction.
