US envoy expresses happiness on Lebanon’s response on Hezbollah’s disarmament plan

(MENAFN) U.S. envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, stated on Monday that he is “satisfied” with Lebanon’s reaction to the disarmament plan he proposed for Hezbollah. The comments followed his meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, according to reports from official sources.

“We had a very satisfactory meeting and appreciate Lebanon’s balanced response,” Barrack said after the discussions. He emphasized that the United States does not intend to impose any decisions on Lebanon regarding Hezbollah, but rather intends to support the country's approach.

“Hezbollah needs to see that there’s a future for them, that that road is not harnessed just solely against them, and that there’s an intersection of peace and prosperity for them also,” he added.

Barrack, who also serves as the U.S. ambassador to Türkiye, reiterated President Donald Trump’s pledge to help improve Lebanon’s economic conditions and urged the Lebanese leadership to take advantage of the current opportunity.

“Dialogue has started between Syria and Israel, just as the dialogue needs to be reinvented by Lebanon,” he said, noting that Israel is interested in achieving peace with its northern neighbor.

Barrack’s roadmap, introduced to top Lebanese leaders during his June 19 visit to Beirut, outlined a plan for Hezbollah to hand over its weapons by the end of the year. In return, Israel would withdraw from five contested border locations in southern Lebanon and release funds meant for rebuilding areas damaged by the recent conflict.
