U.S. Rebukes Houthi Assaults on Two Vessels in Red Sea
“The United States condemns the unprovoked Houthi terror attacks on the civilian cargo vessels MV Magic Seas and MV Eternity C,” the State Department declared Tuesday in an official statement.
“These attacks demonstrate the ongoing threat that Iran-backed Houthi rebels pose to freedom of navigation and to regional economic and maritime security,” the statement continued.
The MV Eternity C, a bulk carrier sailing under a Liberian flag and operated by a Greek company, was struck late Monday in what the EU Naval Force identified as a likely Houthi assault. Another vessel, the MV Magic Seas, came under attack earlier over the weekend.
On Monday, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group launched a coordinated strike on the Magic Seas on Sunday using “two unmanned boats, five ballistic and cruise missiles and three drones.”
Since late 2023, the Houthis have repeatedly targeted maritime traffic in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Aden with drones and missiles. These attacks have disrupted key international trade routes. The group claims the campaign is a gesture of support for Gaza, where an Israeli military operation has reportedly killed more than 57,500 people.
