China Denies Laser Targeting German Aircraft
The Chinese government maintained that these assertions lacked factual support.
During a live-streamed press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning declared, “What Germany has said is fully inconsistent with the facts.”
This statement was made in response to Germany’s diplomatic protest over the incident.
The day before, Berlin had summoned the Chinese ambassador and charged the Chinese military with targeting a German aircraft involved in the EU’s ASPIDES mission using a laser.
According to a news outlet, the German aircraft in question was a reconnaissance plane commissioned specifically for the operation.
The event reportedly unfolded when the plane approached a Chinese frigate near the coast of Yemen.
Mao emphasized that “the Chinese navy’s escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somalia, fulfill responsibility as a major country and contributes to safety of shipping lines.”
She also called on both parties to enhance communication that is “strengthened… fact-based and timely” in order to “avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation.”
Beijing’s statements underscore its commitment to maintaining security in international waters, while also urging open dialogue to prevent diplomatic tensions from escalating.
