Iran, Russia Hold Talks on Iran’s Nuclear Issue

(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov held discussions on Friday over the latest developments regarding Iran’s nuclear program, focusing on the European trio's (E3) threats to reinstate international sanctions.

The phone call came in response to growing concerns over the looming expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231. The Iranian Foreign Ministry released a statement early Saturday, detailing how the E3 – comprising France, Britain, and Germany – has threatened to invoke the snapback mechanism, reimposing sanctions on Tehran.

The statement further emphasized that the E3 lacks the legal or moral authority to trigger the snapback provision. Iran argues that the group has "flagrantly violated" Resolution 2231, which ratified the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Under the terms of the JCPOA, the "snapback" clause permits world powers to restore sanctions on Iran if the country breaches the agreement. However, Tehran maintains that the E3 cannot activate this clause due to their own violations of the resolution.

The two foreign ministers also discussed the future trajectory of nuclear negotiations between Iran and Western powers, reaffirming that Resolution 2231 should expire on its scheduled date, Oct. 18.

Earlier in the day, Araghchi participated in a joint call with the E3 foreign ministers and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. During the conversation, Iran presented its position on the potential use of the snapback mechanism and the resumption of nuclear talks with the Europeans. It was agreed that nuclear negotiations would continue next Tuesday at the deputy foreign minister level.

Iran and the E3 have engaged in multiple rounds of talks since September 2022, with the most recent discussions taking place in Istanbul in late July.
