Sixty-six people pass away due to severe storms in Mexico

(MENAFN) Authorities in Mexico have raised the confirmed death toll from recent extreme storms to 66 as of Wednesday, with several regions still under emergency conditions.

Heavy rains and flooding over the past weekend have severely impacted five states across central Mexico and along the eastern coast. Officials report that 75 people remain missing or unaccounted for.

The Gulf Coast state of Veracruz experienced some of the most severe damage, with authorities confirming 30 deaths and 18 individuals still missing. Hidalgo in central Mexico recorded 21 fatalities and 50 missing persons, while Puebla reported 14 deaths and seven unaccounted for. Queretaro confirmed one casualty, and San Luis Potosi reported no deaths or missing persons, though infrastructure and homes sustained substantial damage.

The federal government has mobilized military personnel to support affected communities, establishing emergency shelters in the most devastated areas. According to the Navy, at least 3,701 people have been evacuated so far.

Government agencies and civil organizations continue delivering humanitarian assistance, including to 19 isolated communities that remain cut off.

Unexpectedly, aid efforts have also been reported from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most violent drug trafficking groups. Videos circulating online show cartel members in tactical gear, armed with high-caliber weapons, distributing supplies.

During her Wednesday morning press briefing, President Claudia Sheinbaum denied the authenticity of the videos, sharing instead images of military personnel providing aid to disaster victims.
