Syrian leader, Putin hold talks in Kremlin
According to reports, al-Sharaa emphasized Moscow’s key role in Syria’s transition to a “new Syria” and pledged to uphold all prior commitments. The meeting at the Kremlin included extended talks and marks the first visit of a Syrian leader to Russia since the fall of Bashar Assad’s government late last year. Al-Sharaa, formerly associated with the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) under the alias Abu Mohammad al-Julani, assumed power following Assad’s departure.
Putin remarked that diplomatic relations between Russia and Syria “have always been friendly” since their establishment in 1944. “Throughout these decades, we have always been guided by one thing – the interests of the Syrian people,” he said.
Al-Sharaa noted that Syria continues to “build on the many achievements” stemming from its cooperation with Russia. “Part of Syria’s food supply and many power plants depend on Russia, and we are trying to redefine the nature of our relations with it, while respecting all past agreements between the countries,” he added.
Russia’s military presence in Syria, including the Khmeimim Airbase and the Tartus naval facility, was initially secured through a 49-year lease signed with Assad in 2017. Reports indicate that Moscow has maintained these bases under the new Syrian leadership. Officials have previously suggested that Damascus may allow Russia to continue operating its facilities, provided their presence benefits the country.
