Protesters in Berlin Decry Suppression of Pro-Palestinian Voices
(MENAFN) On Wednesday, demonstrators assembled in the heart of Berlin to voice their concerns over what they referred to as mounting suppression of pro-Palestinian perspectives within Germany’s educational and cultural sectors.
The protest unfolded on Jaeger Street, located in Berlin's Mitte neighborhood, just prior to the Conference of Education Ministers.
Attendees displayed Palestinian flags and images of academics allegedly killed by Israeli forces, while voicing slogans that criticized the German authorities for their military support to Israel.
Protesters demanded that German organizations halt partnerships with Israeli institutions and appealed to Israel to cease its control over Palestinian lands.
Speaking to a news agency, activist Georg Ismael explained that the rally was intended to persuade science and education ministers to endorse a cultural and academic embargo on Israeli entities.
He claimed that universities and research institutions in Germany "legitimize and even encourage apartheid and occupation" through their affiliations with Israel.
He further asserted that "until Palestinians have equal rights, German institutions should not cooperate with Israeli ones."
Ismael also denounced what he called the "widespread and shocking" crackdown on pro-Palestinian supporters, noting that the situation had escalated to the extent that it drew concern from the Council of Europe's commissioner for human rights.
