Brown University shooting probe continues after release of suspect

(MENAFN) Police in Providence, Rhode Island, released a person of interest Sunday night who had been detained in connection with a shooting at Brown University that left two dead and nine others injured.

"Tonight, we announced that the person of interest is being released. The investigation has been ongoing and remains fully active between all agencies," police stated.

Rhode Island’s Attorney General emphasized that "there is no basis" to consider the released individual a suspect in the case. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told reporters that authorities will continue following all leads until they are certain of the perpetrator’s identity. "Until such time as we have an individual in custody who we're confident is responsible, that we're prepared to press charges and then prosecute, we're going to continue to leave all doors open," he said.

The 24-year-old male had been taken into custody Sunday morning. The shooting took place shortly after 4 pm (2100 GMT) on Saturday, prompting a swift response from university police, local law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical teams.

Brown University’s Provost Francis J. Doyle announced that all remaining undergraduate, graduate, and medical classes, exams, and assignments for the Fall 2025 semester would be suspended.
