Belgium Rules Out Participation in US-Israel Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) Belgium will not join any military operations alongside the United States and Israel against Iran, Prime Minister Bart De Wever reiterated on Monday, according to reports.

Answering parliamentary questions regarding a potential operation in the Strait of Hormuz, De Wever emphasized that the government’s stance is firm: Belgium will not participate in an offensive against Iran alongside Washington and Tel Aviv. He added that any future military requests—whether from NATO or individual states, including recent approaches from Saudi Arabia and the UAE—would require full government deliberation and approval.

De Wever also addressed criticism stemming from his recent remarks about Europe’s relations with Russia. Over the weekend, he had suggested that Europe should “rearm and remilitarize its borders” while working to “normalize relations with Russia and regain access to cheap energy.”

His comments drew both domestic and international criticism, with opposition parties and observers accusing him of being overly conciliatory toward Moscow. De Wever rejected such interpretations, saying critics were portraying his position as “cozying up to Putin” or “groveling at his feet,” which he insisted was not the case.

He clarified that negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin are already underway, but stressed that any normalization of relations should occur only after a peace agreement acceptable to both Ukraine and the European Union is achieved. "That is the aim after every war. Surely it cannot be the intention to remain enemies for eternity?" De Wever said.
