Sinkhole Near Runway Disrupts Operations at New York’s LaGuardia Airport
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey identified the sinkhole close to Runway 4/22 during a morning airfield check. The runway was immediately closed as a precaution while engineering and emergency teams were deployed to assess the situation and begin repairs.
Airport officials said crews are working to determine the cause of the ground collapse and restore safe operations as quickly as possible.
Passengers were warned to expect delays and possible cancellations as flight schedules were adjusted due to the disruption, with additional complications anticipated from forecast thunderstorms later in the day.
Travelers were advised to check directly with airlines for the latest updates as recovery operations continue, according to reports.
